Nothing fancy today. If you’re hiring and catch yourself saying stuff like this, stop:
1. “I don’t like the format of the resume.”
Typos, misspellings, and the content itself? Sure. But the format? We hear this more than we should. (1 time is too many.)
2. “I didn’t like the cover letter.”
I don’t like cover letters, period. But I’m certainly not going to rule anyone out over it.
3. “They went to a ‘lesser’ college.”
Elitism is alive and well.
But if we’re being honest...I wonder if racking up hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt to learn things you can Google isn’t in itself indicative of poor decision-making but that’s another rant entirely...
4. “I wouldn’t get a beer with him”
I don’t know where to start. Hiring a ‘buddy’. Not hiring someone different than you. Relating it to drinking. And yes it’s almost always a ‘him’ when this line is dropped…
There’s just far more important stuff to focus on.
