Too many recruiters don’t understand the business case for their openings. Which makes strategic thinking about the search impossible.
I’ve had some iteration of this conversation with TA reps at companies countless times:
Me: “What’s happening in the business that’s driving this hire?”
TA: “Well, we’re growing a lot.”
Me: “And what’s driving that growth?”
TA: “Uh...the hiring manager can speak to that.”
If you don’t know what’s happening in your business:
You won’t know how to target candidates with relevant experience.
You won’t be able to recognize alignment of interest with candidates (or lack thereof).
You’ll never be able to convince anyone to join. You’ll rely on the hiring manager to do that. Or dumb luck.
This all applies to 3rd party recruiters as well.
Job seekers are sophisticated. They don’t want to work with paper pushers.
So don’t be one.
