There’s a youth-based bias in hiring. It’s so common within recruiting that many aren’t even aware it exists. Or that they’re contributing to it.
I’ve heard these false assumptions more times than I can count:
“People who take a step back in their career are a risk.” Lots of people try senior management and hate it. There’s nothing abnormal here.
“Younger employees are a better long term investment.” Older employees have longer tenures on average. Full stop.
“If we offer someone a lower salary they’ll leave us.” Employees are well aware their salaries won’t straight line up until they retire.
“‘I just want a nice place to work’ is a fluff answer.” People’s goals can change from personal growth to imparting knowledge. Sometimes it is as simple as working with people who deserve your time.
Just some food for thought. Adjust your hiring profiles accordingly.
