The #2 priority for content creators right now: building your own channels. Things you own. Not social media companies.
Organic reach is only going down from here. Big tech is continually refining their algos to maximize ads. And organic content is becoming more and more crowded.
My 2021 priorities:
Build a media site. We’re building a site to host our shows, podcasts, blogs, etc. If you put in the work, relying solely on social to host is silly.
Email & newsletters. What is old is new again. Sounds antiquated? Look at what Morning Brew built. Direct 1:1 interaction. No middle-men. No ad-conflicted algos getting in the way.
Bonus: it’s the easiest way to transfer your audience from on platform to another.
Communities. It’s time we move beyond the influencer/follower model anyway. Semi-private, self-run communities enable what we’re here for in the first place. Networking, learning, feedback.
Last week I launched DIY Content Creators on Slack. There’s no agenda or sales pitch. Just content creators learning from each other. You can join here.
Oh, the #1 priority? Make better content. Always.
