I elaborate in a video here. 3:39 watch. I’m not a brand hater and this will tie back to employer brand, I promise…
Brand is brand. Corporate, employer, personal. It’s all the same idea.
Saying “brand is bullsh*t” undoubtedly has some marketers freaking out.
But saying “personal brand is bullsh*t” always gets a lot of cheers. Everyone’s over it.
Why?
Personal brand turns people off. Because of what it has become. Shameless self-promotion. Faux experts. Made up stories. Vanity metric chasing.
You know, bullsh*t.
But that’s not inherent. That’s just how it’s misused.
Here’s what I believe in: value-driven content, with brand as the after effect. Talk about what you know. Help people out. Build some good will. Everything else is spin.
Here’s the unique thing about employer brand though. When you’re hiring, your spin will get exposed. Like, the day people start. Every time.
So what’s the point of concocting some image of how you want job seekers to view you?
Keep it simple. Create a great working environment. One you’re proud of. Then talk about what you’re doing and why. That’s it.
