This refers to a conversation Nate Guggia and I had on the Employer Content Show, video of the discussion here.
The traditional marketing wisdom is to niche down to build a following. But I disagree.
Something I've noticed about a lot of people I follow. And I'm talking about people I actually like, who have taken the uber-specific strategy: I got bored of their content.
It's just the same thing, over and over. It's not bad. It hasn't become less relevant. I've just heard it a million times before.
So I've tuned them out.
There's a difference between being knowledgeable and being an expert. Anyone can become very knowledgeable about a variety of subjects. It just takes a little time, curiosity, and dedication.
But there are VERY few experts. And that's what it would take to keep someone's attention on a single topic over the long haul.
Range is incredibly underrated. Understanding how different competencies and aspects of the world tie together. And being able to communicate that to others in a relevant way. That's what's interesting to me, anyway.
And it always gives your audience something new.
