If you’ve lost a loved one this year, you’re built to handle it.
I'll explain with a little help from a talking raccoon.
This may be admitting a character flaw but I’m a pop culture junkie. Love the Marvel movies. Guardians of the Galaxy is my favorite. Great cast, fun vibe, A+ soundtrack. Even has a life lesson.
So the ‘roided up alien nearly gets the team killed in revenge-fueled rage over his dead family. He’s consoled by a superpowered tree when the talking raccoon (this movie really is amazing btw) mocks him.
“Oh boo hoo, my wife and child are dead.”
For 2 seconds you think he’s the worst trash panda ever. Then he delivers the truth:
“Everybody’s got dead people.” (The scene, here.)
I lost my father this year. And my mom 2 years back. And my childhood best friend before that.
Luckily, Bradly Cooper’s voiceover reminded me that my feelings are not unique. These are common, inevitable human experiences.
I bring all this up because this year sucks. We’re on track for the highest death rate in decades. These aren’t just stats, but real people mourning real loved ones.
But you will get through it. And continue on. Everyone does.
