A year ago now, we were in full meltdown mode. The Hirewell team did a small pivot. We provided over 150 free job seeking coaching sessions to launch Careerwell.
One thing I learned is that most people who struggle with their job search have about 80% of it down. It’s the last 20% that trips them up.
One of those trouble areas is tracking. A lot of people are frustrated by the numbers. You apply to dozens (hundreds?) of positions, but they don’t go anywhere. How is this happening?
In reality, the number of applications is a terrible metric for gauging your progress. There are often hundreds of people applying to those same roles. The job sites make it insanely easy to do. Your probability of getting an interview in those scenarios is very low. Even when you’re a solid fit.
To that end: conversations are the best metric for tracking success.
What kind? Doesn’t matter. Networking chats, informational interviews, actual interviews, etc. There are lots of ways to talk to people that will push things forward.
Focus on that and good things will happen.
