A key point in Un-Scamming Unlimited PTO: mandatory days off are an incomplete solution.
Any time this topic comes up, thatâs one of the first key solves people point to. Force people to take a minimum time off.
But it doesnât solve the âkeep working on vacation because I donât want to be judgedâ trap.
Or the âI have client deadlines that arenât going to hit themselvesâ trap.
Or the âfoxhole trapâ i.e. hesitance to give you teammates more work while youâre gone.
đIf you create healthy team dynamics, these problems all go away.
These are not PTO issues at all. Theyâre management and training issues. That created a work culture problem.
If people feel like theyâre being judged, you havenât communicated the importance of time off well enough. Or that theyâre doing well and deserve it.
If theyâre stressed about client delivery, you havenât trained them to set expectations and boundaries well enough.
If theyâre worried about dumping it on their teammates, theyâre under-resourced. Or at least feel they are based on your expectations.
Tldr: if you have to tell people to take time off, youâve set the pressure way too high to begin with.
