I've worked with a lot of start ups over the years. These are smart, innovative people, driven by a passion for what they're building. Consumed by that passion sometimes, which isn't a bad thing.
But it is why they often underestimate just how damn hard hiring their team is going to be.
People tend to think their ideas are so great that everyone will 'get it'. Of course they'll all want to work here!
And with that mindset, recruiting is easy, right? We’ll get a junior recruiter to manage the resume flow, set the interviews and we’re good to go.
I’m not throwing shade at junior recruiters. Everyone needs to start somewhere. But I am throwing shade at the thought of big ideas selling themselves.
Talent acquisition is highly strategic. More so than most realize. When you’re building a team, you need someone at the top who can create a top-down strategy.
Employer brand, referral system, DEI metrics, proactive targeting, and sure, jobs ads too.
But most of all: knowing when to tell you, the business exec, that you’re screwing up.
