Most ‘how to hire’ or ‘how to find a job’ advice is opinion. Turns out it’s pretty easy to get reasonably good data from specific segments though. Just ask. I’m all aboard the survey bandwagon. Google Forms are free.
Yes, I know that open-access polls (like the LinkedIn polls) aren’t scientific. But we’re not splitting the atom here. My central thesis is that hiring is a needless painful process because there’s a lack of understanding. Companies don’t know what job seekers really want to see.
One reason for this is that companies take a broad approach. One message for all groups. But job seekers want specifics. People in sales, tech, marketing, finance, etc., all have different questions. And different decision criteria.
