The next Amazon stock is a person...

...and they're on your weekly all hands Zoom call

Everyone likes to say stuff like “employees are your most valuable asset.”

Yet the average Glassdoor company rating is a middle-of-the-road 3.3.

Which means some companies get it. But a lot still don’t.

So today I want to appeal to the money-grubbing capitalists out there. The people who say “sure, culture is important but we’re trying to run a business here…”

You’re getting in your own way.

Perhaps it’s the recruiter in me. I see first hand companies whose successes and failures are not based upon The Big Idea. The Elite Salesperson. Or The Brilliant Technologist.

It’s based on attracting and retaining great talent. The people who can execute the business strategy.

The business world is obsessed with growth. To grow, you need more people. To get more people - without losing them - you need to not suck.

Come to think of it, not sucking is the wrong bar here. That gets you a 3.3 rating.

Want a team that goes the extra mile by default? Who gets excited about new challenges? Whose enthusiasm shows in the quality of their work?

You have to show up when it matters for that. How do you handle an employee’s personal crisis? Or the next big national trauma (which seems to happen with increasing regularity lately)?

Small investments can pay off big. Everyone wants to know what the next Amazon is. That stock they can buy at $25 and watch it go to the moon.

Well, the next Amazon is a person. And they’re on your weekly all hands Zoom call.
