The ‘old normal’ was biased. Why would we return to that?
Care about the gender wage gap? One of the biggest drivers was the gender norms of raising children. That typically falls on women.
And everyone knows you can’t work a full time job while raising a kid.
Oh wait. Yes you can. Millions of people did it just fine last year.
And it’s not just about kids. People have lots of responsibilities that constrain their location, but not their ability to execute. Sick family members. Aging parents. Or other dependents with special needs.
Which reminds me, the ‘old normal’ was ableist, too. There’s a 60% unemployment rate among people with disabilities. Just getting to the damn office is a big chunk of that. And that’s not even counting underemployment.
I can’t tell you how to run your return-to-work policies. I know that ‘normal’ just ‘feels right’ to a lot of people.
But it sure as hell didn’t feel right to everyone.
