I’ve stayed clear of the lightning rod known as The Great “Should I Use The LinkedIn Open To Work Banner On My LinkedIn” Debate.
👉But a lesser known aspect: while your employer can’t see your green banner, their friends at other orgs can.
And I’ve heard of people sharing this info. My take?
👉 Don’t rat people out. It’s unethical.
Now there’s 2 possible scenarios:
The company uses this info to diagnose and fix potential issues. Cool. If this were the only scenario, great. But it’s not…
The company puts this person at the top of their chopping block if cuts are on the horizon. Or passes them over for promotion or development.
Yes, it’s nice to know when someone on your team may not be feeling it so you can address things. But do it the right way. You know, things like proper management, mentoring, reviews, etc.
👉Be the leader people feel comfortable having uncomfortable conversations with.
If someone asks you for this info? You may feel like you’re doing your friend a solid. But you’re also messing with a person’s career. Decide who you want to be.
And if you’re currently employed, keep this in mind about the banner. Use it or don’t, I can’t tell you what to do.
