What if I were to tell you that Unlimited PTO was devised as a multi-million dollar cost savings scam?
(That’s exactly what I’m telling you.)
Here’s a leaked email that shows how one org saved $36 million a year with unlimited PTO.
Gotta admire the hustle. But whoever devised Unlimited PTO as a marketing tool to attract talent is the real (evil) genius.
How’s it work exactly?
1. They save money because when people leave, they have to pay out their accrued time off.
Unlimited PTO = no accrued time off = no pay out.
2. You can’t actually take unlimited time off. There’s these things called “assignments” and “deadlines” and “approvals” that tend to get in the way.
Of course, what I’m painting is the diabolical, worst case scenario. There’s a few layers to this. Not every company uses Unlimited PTO this way.
So let’s collect some data on the employee side (click to take the poll)
