What does neurodivergent bias look like? Not giving someone the role because they didn't get 'excited' enough.
This image tells the whole story really.
A friend of mine wanted to go on a Talent Rant™️ after hearing how their friend got ruled out for a job. I support the right to rant, but outing someone by association isn’t ideal either. So I’ll take it from here.
Some disabilities are invisible. Not everyone is going to react, respond, or even process information the same way. That doesn’t mean they can’t be a kick ass coder, marketer, lawyer, or whatever they want to be.
And I get it from a hiring perspective. You click with some people, you don’t with others. Jobs are competitive, someone’s gonna get the offer and someone won’t.
We don’t know all the reasons why this candidate didn’t get the role, we just know the one given: she wasn’t excited enough.
For someone who is neurodivergent and doesn’t express emotions the way that most people do, that has to be insanely frustrating.
The fix is straightforward, but hard: cut out the subjective bullsh*t.
We’re humans. We’re subjective and judgy as hell. I’m not going to sit here and tell you I’ve never made a snap decision loaded with unintentional bias.
But I’ll leave you with this: think about this person next time you rule someone out.
Keep it top of mind. Is the decision you're making fair? And how will you communicate it?
