Why companies ask for 5 years of experience for entry level roles
Recruiting Myth Busters, Episode 1
If you want to know why companies ask for 5 years of experience for entry level roles, I’ve got the answer.
But let’s first look at how 𝟮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 of experience ends up being "entry level."
1) Some job boards classify years of experience into ranges. 0-2 years falls into the entry level bucket.
If you want a 2 year person, it gets tagged by the platform as entry level. That's it.
2) Some companies are open on experience. 0-2 years. Anywhere in there. But it gets conflated as one in the same because they suck at writing. (Most people do.)
3) Some companies want people with any kind of job experience. Internships, college gigs, etc. Any job will do. Because it really is entry level.
4) Sometimes it’s not an entry level job. It’s just entry level pay for an experienced job because the company's cheap. There’s a difference.
Back to the initial question: how does this turn into 5 years of experience?
It doesn't. It’s made up. Someone posted about it one day, it got a lot of likes. Then it got parroted into a meme.
Easily-agreeable takes that prey on common frustrations boost those vanity metrics. 🔥 🔥 🔥
