Why most personal brand advice is garbage: you become known for talking about nothing.
Engagement obsession is unhealthy. Don’t get it twisted. Engagement metrics are vanity metrics.
Views, follows, comments, etc. They mean nothing if they don’t drive towards a business objective.
Yet they’re the focus of most personal brand advice. Post every day. Comment on influencers’ posts. Reply to those who comment on your posts. Ask trite questions like “agree?” Recycled by the gurus, over and over.
They're not wrong though. That game plan will drive your engagement numbers, as promised. But it completely misses the core aspect of an effective personal brand:
Teach people something they didn’t already know.
If you’re not sharing new insights or your unique perspective, you’re preaching to the choir. And yes, people love hearing something they already agree with. They’ll ‘like’ the hell out of those posts.
But they’ll also forget them as soon as they scroll to the next.
Being memorable requires substance. Answer your clients’ questions. Simplify complex topics.
It isn’t easy. But that’s the real game.
